Hermit Crab {FREEBIE!}

The hermit crabs that are a part of our Science 21 program managed to survive the long Memorial Day weekend in my classroom.  Well, all but one, who apparently decided to abandon his shell and not make his way back! My firsties are finishing up their unit on hermit crabs, now it's time to write about what they've learned.  Here's a little FREEBIE! It includes a tree map and hermit crab themed writing paper.

Memorial Day {FREEBIE!}

In honor of the brave men and women who have served our country, and given their lives so that we may have the freedoms that we do today; here is a children's coloring page.  If you're still in school, like me, and if you didn't get a chance to teach anything about Memorial Day before the holiday, like me...then please enjoy this {FREEBIE}. ☺

How Should Students With Learning Disabilities Be Identified? - On Special Education - Education Week

Check out this Education Week article about the use of RtI and the identification of students with disabilities.  Personally, I have struggled with this the past two school years.  It seems virtually impossible to get students identified.  Our district has basically told teachers that we have too many students identified as special needs.  They have made the referral process an incredible battle to get students the services they desperately need to be successful.  Teaching in an inner-city school brings many challenges, getting students the help they need should not be one of those challenges.  I was happy to read in this article that: "The RTI process can't be used to deny or delay these evaluations." This has too often been the case in my district.

Snow Days in May! And a FREEBIE!

All winter long I eagerly anticipated snow days...But to no avail! We had 1 snow day all winter long.  We have 5 snow days built into our school calendar.  So, fortunately we get giveback days for the unused snow days!  Typically we only get Memorial Monday off, we don't usually even get the Friday before it off.  This year....we get Thursday, Friday and Monday!  YAY! At this point in the school year, this kind of little break from the kiddos is so necessary  AMAZING!

If you're still plugging along toward summer vacation like me, you may be interested in this cute little making words literacy station {FREEBIE!}.  My firsties LOVE these making words activities!

I hope you have a restful, enjoyable Memorial Day!

What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger

I think the first time I heard this phrase I was sobbing as I watched Steel Magnolias with my mom.  Anyone remember that movie?!

This Kelly Clarkson song is a positive statement.  The video was filmed at Seattle's Children's Hospital with cancer patients.  A teacher friend of mine told me about it at school today.  I'm happy to share it with all of you.  May God bless each of these children, their families, and the hardworking nurses,  and staff that care for them each day.
