Back to School and a nice little giveaway...

With school just around the corner for many of us, and having already started for some of us--my thoughts turned to the first few days and weeks of school.  What do I get my firsties working on in those first few days and weeks of school? I know that as I begin literacy stations in the beginning of the year, I want to teach my students to work independently, and I want their work to be meaningful.  With that in mind, I created a Back to School Old Maid game that will work nicely as a review of previously learned sight words, and it will give students a chance to learn to work with partners or in small groups.  Of course we all know this takes a lot of modeling to help students to become successful...but this game is ideal for the beginning of the year.  Student's sight word acquisition can vary in the beginning of the year of course, but as a review, I plan to use the Old Maid Pre-Primer words with my firsties in the beginning of the year. In the first few weeks of school I may find I have several students who could use a higher level of words, and will use the Primer or First Grade games with them.
